The Legal Moves of Chess Pieces

A board game that is popularized by Europeans in the 1800s, chess captures the hearts of people who have the skills or abilities to analyze the military tactics and techniques that can be used in the game. The knowledge of players about the appropriate time to employ the tactics is necessary to have an advantage in chess. Above all, it is crucial that players have a background on the official rules of the game to be more confident when they play it.

Having sufficient knowledge about the official chess rules concerning the moves of chess pieces are important to be assured that a player will not establish illegal positions in the game. The strengths of the pieces vary on their moves so it is advantageous for players to have a background on this aspect. In addition, the outcome of a game is influenced or affected by the ability of players to maximize the legal moves of a particular piece.

The moves of the pawn are simple that players will not experience difficulty and problem in learning and applying them in actual chess games. According to the official chess rules, pawns can only advance two squares for their initial move and their succeeding moves should be one square at a time. In addition, pawns can only capture the pieces that are placed on the diagonal square in front of them.

Considering that the knights and bishops are minor pieces in chess, it is only appropriate that players are knowledgeable about the legal moves that they can make. The moves of the knights are distinct that they are allowed to jump over other pieces. Knights must follow an L-pattern which can be either two squares horizontally and one square vertically or two squares vertically and a single square horizontally.

As compared to other chess pieces, the power or strengths of bishops are commonly manifested in middle games. The ability of these pieces to cover most of the spaces in the chessboard allows players to easily place checks as well as checkmate in the latter part of the game. Bishops can move as many squares as possible given that the squares are located along the diagonal where the pieces are positioned.

Being the strongest pieces in the game, the rook and the queen should be valued by players because they can help them have strong, dominant and advantageous positions in end games. The rook can move in any square in the chessboard, given that it is placed horizontally or vertically along the square where the piece is positioned. On the other hand, the queen is considered as the most powerful chess piece since its moves are the combination of the moves of the rook and the bishop.

Knowing that the king is the weakest piece in chess, it is important that players know efficient ways to protect and secure it. The king can only move one square forward, backward or sideward. Since the moves of this piece are very limited, players must be aware that it can be easily pinned or attacked by opposing pieces.

Learning the basic moves of the chess pieces is essential for players to at least have a fair chance of winning in the game. In this case, they are also advised to learn the other topics that are covered in official chess rules to be more competent when they play in tournaments.
